The Little Museum that Could!

There is a hidden gem in the ordinary looking building west of the Fire Hall on Roblin Boulevard. (5006 Roblin Blvd.) Every Saturday afternoon between 2-4 pm, a secret key opens up the past for explorers of the old days of Charleswood!

Over 200 years ago and beyond, there were aboriginal people, buffalo hunters, settlers, remittance men and other pioneers on horseback, as the south side of the river opened up to what we call civilization. Paddle wheelers, canoes and ferries traversed the Assiniboine River as the major trade route west, Red River carts pulled by oxen toiled along the Baie St. Paul Road leaving cart tracks that can still be seen today near Caron House. “The Grand Passage”, was the primary North-South crossing route and a lifeline to Pembina for the early Red River Settlement!

The hidden gem is our Charleswood Historical Society Museum, a tiny space which is filled to the rafters with artifacts, pictures, memorabilia and hundreds of old time items from days gone by. Since our Charleswood Centennial Year, in 2013, we are open every Saturday (2-4 pm), responding to an increasing interest from both traditional and new visitors.

Our Museum is more than historic pictures, displays and artifacts…it’s people! Ask about:

Our Schools Program

We welcome both school groups to visit, as well as providing a popular series of presentations for elementary and secondary students. The Museum is our resource centre and jumping off point for innovative school programs. Stay tuned, there are more on the way.

Joint Museum/Charleswood Library Display

The new Charleswood Library features a regularly updated historic display case featuring a series of historic pictures, artifacts and memorabilia from the Museum. In addition, we have contributed a series of historic pictures for the Library’s feature wall with scenes of old Charleswood.
